What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is the clinical terminology for cosmetic reshaping of the nose by changing the size, shape or overall appearance. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common procedures performed to enhance this central facial feature, thereby improving the patient’s appearance offering increased confidence and self-esteem.Occasionally patient’s also require correction of functional aspects of the nose, such as deviated septum or other airway obstructions. These reconstructive procedures can be corrected along with the aesthetic improvements for a single combined procedure.
Who is the best candidate for Rhinoplasty?
The best candidate for rhinoplasty is a person seeking improvement, not perfection, in the appearance of the nose. If you are physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in your expectations, you may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty.
Overview of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is generally performed on an out-patient basis with intravenous sedation. The procedure is usually completed within approximately three to four hours.
There are two approaches to performing rhinoplasty, open or closed. A closed rhinoplasty is performed by making small incisions inside the nose. An open rhinoplasty is performed by making small incision on the columella (the small piece of tissue between the nostrils) and inside the nose.
In either case, the immediate post-operative recovery time is approximately seven to ten days. The final result cannot be judged until one year from the procedure.
What can I expect from surgery?
Rhinoplasty is a same day procedure that takes a few hours. Conscious sedation and sometimes general anesthesia is employed so that there is no discomfort during the procedure. A person undergoing rhinoplasty may go home the same day to the comfort of his/her own home. A light splint is worn on the nose for protection and to minimize swelling. Surprisingly, there is little pain following rhinoplasty, still pain relievers are made available.
At about day five to seven day, the splint is removed. Over the next several weeks minor swelling continues to subside and the nose begins to feel more natural. In time, the nose should look and feel like the person was born with that nose, not that the person had a “nose job”.
Patient Expectations
Rhinoplasty results are permanent, and scars, if any, are minimal and inconspicuous. Most patients return to work after seven to ten days and physical activity should be kept to a minimum for the first three weeks. It is important to keep in mind that minor swelling can persist for several months following surgery and that final results may not be seen for up to one year. Patience and realistic expectations are important during this time.
The factors effecting the result are:
- Age: Nose surgery should generally be delayed until after age 16 for girls, and 17 for boys
- Skin thickness of the nose
- Vertical axis of the nose
- Nose size
- Previous nasal surgery
- Quality of wound healing
What Does Rhinoplasty Cost?
The cost of rhinoplasty varies depending on the surgeon’s skill, the geographic area where the surgery is performed, and the type of structural and cosmetic changes made to the nose. Cost cannot be predicted accurately until the surgeon performs an examination and develops a surgical plan.
Rhinoplasty costs range from $3,000 to $8,000. The cost comprises three fees: surgical fee, anesthesia fee, and facility fee. The anesthesia fee ranges from $600 to $1,000, the facility fee ranges from $700 to $1,100, and the rest of the cost is the surgeon’s fee.
The most costly aspect of rhinoplasty is the surgeon’s fee. This cost is the most difficult to estimate, since the fee can vary greatly depending on the surgeon’s training, skill, experience, and other factors. You can learn more about fees from our table of average surgeon fees.
Skill and Training Affects Rhinoplasty Cost
It’s important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, who has extensive, specific rhinoplasty experience, as well as expertise in all areas of facial plastic surgery. Board certification requires specific and rigorous surgical education and training. More highly qualified, board-certified surgeons command higher fees, but they can also help ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatment for your condition, employ the most appropriate techniques, increase your odds of success, and reduce the risk of complications.
The type of certification is also important. There are more than 150 self-designated boards, but only a handful that are designated by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Be sure to ask your surgeon about surgical training and board certification when you investigate the cost for rhinoplasty.
Extent of Rhinoplasty Procedure
The extent of the surgery makes a cost difference. For example, a slight surgical modification or reduction to the point of the nose requires less surgical time than narrowing the bridge or a complete change of shape. The type of rhinoplasty procedure, open or closed, also affects surgical time and cost.
Payments for Rhinoplasty
Some of the cost of rhinoplasty can be covered by insurance if the rhinoplasty procedure is related to modifying the nasal passage to aid in breathing, or another medical necessity. You can ask your surgeon about filing for insurance. Rhinoplasty for purely cosmetic reasons is not covered by insurance.
