Did you know that an estimated 180 million people are visually disabled, while close to 50 million of them are blind? According to the World health Organisation, about 80 percent of the world’s blindness is avoidable, preventable or treatable. One of Singapore’s biggest problems is myopia, which in some cases can lead to potentially blinding conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataract. The easiest way to prevent this short-sightedness is to take good care of your eyes by limiting the duration of continuous near work, like using the computer, reading and writing, and take regular vision breaks. After every 30 minutes, relax your eyes by looking at distant object or out of a window for three to five minutes. And don’t forget to blink. Blinking keeps the surface of our eyes moist, dust-free and clean.
